Other wildlife is abundant if you are looking for it—sea birds moving through the marsh, sea turtles making their way toward the water’s edge, even jellyfish and other creatures to watch for and give a little space.
A simple walk on the beach becomes an opportunity for discovery. Starfish. Olive shells. Conch shells. You never know what you might find. Look down and notice the feel of your feet sinking into the sand and water. Look out at the horizon. Feel the sun on your face and saltwater on your skin. Listen to the waves crashing along the shore.
And then there is the joy of play. The thrill of catching a wave on a boogie board, followed by the gentle settling back into the water as the wave subsides. Kites flying overhead. Sailboats passing by. Children running toward the water and back again.
And, of course, there is the food—the taste of shrimp and crab, pimento cheese, Carolina grits and rice, the comfort of Lowcountry cooking.
