Acadia National Park

Where mountains meet the sea.

Acadia is a landscape that encompasses it all—from rocky cliffs and glacial lakes to forests, winding trails, and quiet harbor shorelines. It draws you into the landscape, inviting you to wander its paths, take in view after view, and slow down enough to notice the small moments of wonder along the way.

Acadia holds space for both adventure and reflection—for exploring, getting quiet, and simply taking it all in. For children and families alike, the experience has a way of staying with you. Long after you leave, the beauty remains—imprinted on memory through the places you discovered, the moments you shared, and the landscape you experienced together.

what makes this place special

Acadia is a dream—truly—a place that offers the full range of experiences from mountain to shore. There is dramatic beauty around every corner, but also quiet paths, tucked-away coves, and places to simply sit and take it all in.

What makes Acadia especially wonderful is the way wild nature and simple pleasures exist side by side. You can spend the morning climbing a mountain or walking along the rocky coast, then wander into a small Mount Desert Island town for a warm blueberry treat. There are trails to explore, lakes to discover, ocean views to take in, and plenty of places to pause along the way.

It is a place that makes adventure feel accessible, even for families, while leaving room for the slower moments too. And perhaps that is part of what makes Acadia so memorable: you don't have to choose between experiencing the wild and enjoying the comforts of being there. You can have both.

what to notice

A friend once asked me about our itinerary for Acadia. “None,” I said. For the most part, we left our days open—time to wander, to follow a path simply because it looked interesting, to stop when something caught our attention. There is something special about a place that gives you permission not to hurry.

Notice the small things. The boat-filled harbors. The clear glacial ponds. The gigantic bubble rocks. The astounding cliffs. The trek to Bar Island. The taste of popovers with strawberry jam. Wild blueberries in every form imaginable. The sunset in its array of colors from Cadillac Mountain. The winding carriage roads and trails. See what your children notice. What small details stand out when you aren't in a hurry?

And make room for play. Climb a rock. Find the perfect skipping stone. Follow a trail without knowing exactly where it will lead. Let imagination take over. Some of the best moments in Acadia may be the ones you never planned.

slow & wonder

So much of our days are scheduled. Some of us love that—the rhythm, the routine, knowing what comes next. For others, even the thought of white space can feel a little anxiety-provoking. And while there is real value in routines and rhythms, most of us could use a little more margin and breathing room. If not in our everyday lives, then perhaps when we can.

When we slow down, we make room for life to unfold in ways we can't always plan. There is time for a whoopie pie. Time to linger over a lobster roll, sip a blueberry soda, watch the boats come and go. Time to sit a little longer, to be together without wondering what comes next.

Acadia encourages this kind of slowing and savoring. Being still. Doing, yes—but doing and being all wrapped up together. And when there is nowhere you have to be, there is time to notice one another, too—to wonder, wander, laugh, and discover something side by side. The landscape becomes part of the experience, but so do the people you share it with.

Places worth remembering.

At Mountain Shore Books, we believe the places that shape us are worth slowing down for, looking closely at, and remembering. Our books are an invitation to return to the landscapes we love—and to discover new ones with the people we love.

Because a place can be more than somewhere you go. It can become part of your story.
